When you move house, it’s important to update your address as soon as possible. As discussed in our document checklist, having the wrong address showing on your documents can be a barrier to getting finance.
Besides your friends and family, you will need to update your address with a number of companies. Let’s break it down.
Local authority/government
- The local council – you can usually update your address for council tax purposes online
- Electoral roll – get on the voters roll as soon as possible at your new address
- The DVLA – don’t forget to update your driving licence
- DWP – if you’re in receipt of any benefits
- Your child’s school – you’d be amazed how many school photographs are sent to old addresses every year!
Household
- Phone and broadband – if you’re paying for this already, you’ll have to contact your provider to get them to switch your subscription over to your new address
- TV licence – your TV licence isn’t valid when you move to a new address, so contact them and get your information updated
- Subscription TV – such as Sky, Amazon Prime, Netflix. If the service you use requires a satellite dish they might have to arrange to come out and install one, depending on what’s already at the property
- Online shopping – you don’t want your new purchases going to your old address!
- Anyone providing services, such as a window cleaner, dog walker, milkman, gardener, mobile hairdresser, or cleaner
Insurance companies
- Car insurance – your payments might change as the premium is partly based on where you live
- Personal insurance, such as life cover, critical illness cover, and income protection plans – so policy documents and other correspondence can be sent to the right place
- Buildings insurance
- Pet insurance
Health
- Doctor and pharmacist
- Dentist
- Optician
- Vet
- Any other healthcare professional you see
Money
- Bank or building society – anyone you have an account with, be it a current account, savings account, ISA, or bond
- Pension provider
- Your employer
- Any company you have outstanding finance with, like credit card or loan providers
- Your mortgage provider – just to be on the safe side, so they can contact you in the future, although the lender should notify them of completion too
